The harried mother, two rambunctious kids and the clueless, bumbling father – welcome to the family sitcom! It’s a classic, tried-and-true formula that we all know and love – but does it truly reflect the real experiences of the modern and diverse Canadian family? Scotiabank Nuit Blanche exhibit Honey, I’m Home! parodies family sitcoms of the ’90s such as Full House, Everybody Loves Raymond and Home Improvement. With it’s archetypal characters, wacky yet touching plot lines, and omnipresent laugh tracks, Honey, I’m Home!is a near-perfect classic sitcom missing only one thing – a “dad”.

Nuit Blanche guests of all genders, ages, cultural backgrounds, and sexual orientations are invited to play the missing father role in this original sitcom during the night of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2011. The participants were filmed in the partial TV studio set, visible behind a glass façade, while the live footage was inserted into pre-taped episodes of Honey I’m Home!. As performances are simulcast to the audience outside, viewers are confronted with an unexpected ‘father’ in a traditional sitcom family.

Episodes of Honey, I’m Home! were subsequently featured as part of the juried exhibition at Propeller Gallery, Life Serial.
