May 20 – June 10, 2012
DESCRIPTION
Ephemera curated by Madeleine Co. for Art of the Danforth’s Zone X explores the transitory nature of human experience and its impact on individual identity and community. Our artists integrate the personal stories and interactions of local Danforth residents into their projects.
Stories You Haven’t Heard (from Woodbine to Greenwood) by The Pocketology Collective recognizes that pieces of ephemera like an old wrinkled receipt can tell a story and seek to uncover these hidden tales. Dan Bazuin‘s Traffic Jam turns a stack of perforated computer paper into a kilometre long visual highway, inviting viewers to participate by adding their own “vehicles” to the road. Stephanie Avery‘s haunting photo series Abandonments is wheatpasted throughout the festival and depicts the beauty and decay of forgotten structures, challenging the viewer to reflect on the transitory nature of physical spaces. These are the People in Your Neighbourhood is the brainchild of Mammalian Diving Reflex and Madeleine Co. which examines the definition of community through the eyes of local Grade 4 students from R.H McGregor Elementary School.
These ephemeral projects allow us to examine how such experiences hold lasting significance in our personal lives and shape our understanding of community, home, and belonging.
Closing Party: Saturday June 9, 2012
